I just finished Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier. I can't believe I had not read this book before! It is gripping, mysterious, and romantic.
The heroine, who remains nameless throughout the book, is a young companion to an older woman. She meets the recently widowed Maxim de Winter in Monte Carlo. After a whirlwind romance, they marry and Maxim takes the heroine back to his estate, Manderly, in England. Upon their arrival, the new Mrs. de Winter is not welcomed with open arms, but is constantly reminded of Maxim's wife, Rebecca and how wonderful, beautiful, talented, and perfect she was. Mrs. de Winter is naturally intimidated, and every time she makes a suggestions as to how the household should run, she is told, "That is not the way Mrs. de Winter would have done it." Everyone in the house is devoted to Rebecca, and it shows. But Mrs. de Winter is not satisfied, and goes looking for answers about this mysterious woman who still seems to have Manderly under her thumb. But the answers may be more than she bargained for ...
That's all I can tell you without spoiling the book! Someone at work recommended the Hitchcock version of the movie, so that's on my to-watch list now. I've read several others lately, so I'll be working on some posts to tell you about those.
Happy Reading!
